The history of the residence

Residence Bizzoni was created through the restoration of premises once part of one of the first industrial settlements in Terni (1861), the “Bizzoni Sawmill.”

“The first industrial citizen”
This is how Vincenzo Bizzoni was described in a 1927 article in Il Messaggero, which featured an interview with the 80-year-old founder of the sawmill that bore his name.

The sawmill began operations in 1861 and was, for a long time, the most important in the region. The quality of its products was widely recognized both in Italy and abroad. Between 1885 and 1887, the sawmill’s machinery was used to produce the first lighting system in Terni, although initially limited to the city theater, nearby houses, and streets around Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.

The facility was powered by a hydraulic turbine with a strength of 36 horsepower, which in 1899 drove two vertical saws, three horizontal frame saws, two band saws, eight circular saws, and two machines for producing matchsticks.

The primary products included large quantities of packing crates and beech and walnut chairs. Additionally, the company operated a branch in Rome at Piazza dell’Esedra 60, where it maintained a large depot of sawdust that was marketed on a wide scale.

Bizzoni also built housing for his workers near the sawmill.

The sawmill ceased operations in 1972.
